QUITTING MY JOB & DECIDING ON A MOVE TO PARIS…

WHY PARIS? WHY NOW?

Ok so here goes, my first ever blog post. You’ll have to bear with me. I’m quite nervous about writing it all down and I’m even more nervous about people reading it. That being said I wanted to start writing a blog so I had something to look back on and remember my time in Paris and also so friends and family could keep up with what I’ve been doing.

Ok, enough of that. Let’s get to it! So why Paris? Working and living abroad is something I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve never had the urge to go travelling, living out of a backpack and staying in hostels isn’t really my thing – totally cool if it’s yours but anyone who knows me will tell you travelling light and the thought of roughing it a bit really isn’t my style. Ever since I can remember we’ve gone on family holidays to France and I also started learning French at a young age. I’ve been to Paris several times and really fell in love with the city, I’ve been living and working in London for the last six years and the vibe is so different. Paris felt calmer, the architecture seems more beautiful, I just really felt it was the right city for me. So knowing I wanted to live abroad, knowing I loved Paris and knowing I’ve been itching to pick French up again I settled on heading there.

The next step was leaving my job. I worked for a great company with fantastic people and had a good position there. I know what you’re thinking, why leave!? I’d been there for six years and worked my way up from an intern to Brand Marketing Manager. I couldn’t progress any further (my manager was the Head of Marketing) and I’d been in my role for two years so it was a good time to make a change. I felt this was a good opportunity to follow my dream, if I didn’t do it now when would I? I didn’t have any major commitments in London like a mortgage or long-term relationship, the tenancy was coming up on my flat and I decided to just go for it. I spoke to my manager about it early on, she’d known working abroad was something I wanted to do at some point and was super supportive. We discussed how long I would stay on for and that was that, the wheels were set in motion for me ending one chapter to begin another.

I finished up at work last week, I’m very lucky to have been surrounded by such great people and they made sure I had a fantastic time. I’ve made some genuine friends during my time there and I decided to take polaroids of my last few days so I could make a little memory book – you can see some in the picture above. I always think polaroids are such a nice way to capture a moment, no editing, no filtering, no second chances. People perfectly captured in that moment.

I took a couple of days to re-group in London and to see a few people before leaving to start sorting things out. It was really nice to have some down time before heading back to my parents house in Suffolk where the real work has begun. First off, trying to combine everything I’ve accumulated over six years living in London into my room back home has been…difficult. Let’s just say I’m going to need to let go of some (A LOT) things.

I’ve decided to go down the au pairing route and have been looking into families this week. I’ve chosen au pairing as I really want to be emerged into French culture whilst being able to learn the language at the same time. They really think of au pairs as an extension of the family and I love that I would have a home away from home. I’d thought a lot about my options and decided this was the best option for me personally. I’ve spoken to a couple of families so far and think I’m pretty close to making a decision, fingers crossed I’ll have something confirmed in the next few days! That’s probably enough for now…I’ll be back with more soon!
